1. Why Fire?
Fire has been intertwined with human existence for millennia. The utilization of fire by our predecessors was distinct from modern practices. Casting our minds back to the era of early humans and rudimentary societies, it was fire that propelled our evolutionary advancement. The advent of cooking transformed our nutritional processing systems. Darkness no longer rendered us sightless; we could illuminate the void underneath the nocturnal heavens. Had we not harnessed this powerfulforce, humanity would have remained ensnared in literal shadow.
"Fires are multisensory experiences that have numerous unexplored dimensions when considering human evolution."
Throughout history, our ancestors incorporated fire into numerous ceremonies and rituals. They utilized this powerfulelement in diverse ways. Fire serves to cleanse the atmosphere of negative energy, facilitate personal transitions through life's phases, and strengthen the ties within a community. In our practices today, we can emulate these age-old traditions regularly.
2. How it works?
Adding a new element to your morning routine may feel daunting. However, this new routine doesnt have to take much time. Even a mindful practice for 2-5 mins in the morning makes a difference. Starting off slow is key. If you already feel pressed for time try to start with 1 minute. When you wake up try placing a candle on your nightstand or bathroom, whatever place you spend the most time in the mornings. Before you start your routine light the candle and just sit for a couple minutes, focus on your breath, close your eyes, and either name 3 things your grateful for or set an intention for the day. You can alternate gratitudes and intention setting.
As you practice this routine you can then incorporate other practices throughout the week. Use these steps as buildingblocks and in no particular order.
2. Candle Gazing
Starting your day with a fire ritual can help to supercharge your day and set you on the path of productivity and creative flow. Candle gazing is a powerful and simple ritual that can help clear your mind of distractions and help to center your energy. The practice involves focusing your gaze on a flame, allowing it to burn away any mental and emotional clutter. This ritual can be done in just a few minutes and can be done anywhere, anytime.
The ritual of candle gazing can help to boost your concentration, focus, and mental clarity. When done properly, it can help to open up new pathways for inspiration and creativity. With regular practice, this fire ritual can help to create a powerful foundation for a productive day ahead.
To start choose a seated position. Make sure the candle is about eye level to you on a flat surface. I recommend starting with a couple deep breaths then open your eyes and gaze at the candle. A soft gaze is best, do not strain your eyes. Start with 2 minutes and work your way to 5-10 minutes gradually. After your time is up take a few moments to sit with yourself before standing up.
3. Pranayama with Candles
Pranayama has become increasingly popular in the West. The techniques can be as simple as deep breathing to others that we recommend seeking a trained professional. Box breathing is a great pranayama technique that helps balance the nervous system. Doing this breathwork first thing in the morning helps your nervous system have a baseline for the rest of the day.
Box Breathing:
Inhale for 4 Seconds; Hold for 4 Seconds; Exhale for 4 Seconds; Hold for 4 Seconds; Repeat.
Do this for 5 minutes and work your way up. You can do this breathwork exercise at any time of day, especially if you are feeling overwhelmed.
4. Meditation with Candles
Setting the space for meditation helps to be able to "fall" into a peaceful state. Naturally when your body feels safe and calm the mind can start to shift to calmness as well. However if your environment is feeling hostile your body is picking up on those external signals, telling your brain this is not a safe space.
Placing a few candles, creating a warm glow relaxes the body and helps cleanse the space energetically. If you are new to meditation start by breathing deeply then slowly shift to just watching your natural breath. The goal isn't an empty mind but to become aware of the thoughts we are having. Again start off small, meditating for 5 minutes is great, if you can go longer do so but don't feel like you need to sit for hours.
By integrating fire rituals into our mornings, we stoke the flames of our inner worlds. This focused start can supercharge your day, providing the warmth and light needed to navigate life's complexities with grace. Try these practices for yourself!
